11 Harmful Toxins in Most Laundry Detergent

More of us are becoming aware of just how many toxins are hiding in our homes, but laundry detergent is one product that often gets overlooked. Yet, your clothes are in contact with your skin all day, and for many people, all night, too (as do the sheets and other bedding you wash). The chemicals in detergents are not magically all washed away in the rinse cycle — many can and do remain in the clothing.

Your skin is a prominent doorway into your body, meaning you can literally be consuming many of the chemicals where they may be absorbed into your bloodstream. Plus, even while you are washing clothes using these typical detergents, the chemicals can off-gas into the air you breathe and land on surfaces. While everyone is at risk for health problems from toxic laundry detergent, those who may suffer the most from immediate effects are children, the elderly, and anyone with sensitive skin.

Plus, finding a safe laundry detergent can be tough since some companies are “greenwashing” consumers — which essentially means fooling them — by using phrases on their labels that sound health-conscious. When you turn the product around and read the ingredient label, however, they can be anything but health-conscious.

One laundry ingredient you want to avoid is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is a surfactant, which means it helps to remove dirt and other debris from clothing. The problem with SLS is that it may cause skin, eye, and lung irritation. Another nasty chemical found in laundry detergent that you definitely don’t want in your home is 1,4 dioxane, which is classified by the EPA as a likely human carcinogen and can cause skin, lung, kidney, and liver issues. Plus, here are more chemicals you want to avoid when selecting a laundry detergent.

How Your Nose May Be Causing You to Overeat

If you pass by a restaurant and smell food being cooked, you may be more likely to want to eat if you’re feeling hungry than if you’re already full. That is unless your olfactory-hunger queues aren’t working as well as they should.

For a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers at Northwestern Medicine looked at brain imaging data obtained from a comprehensive National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative known as the Human Connectome Project, which aims to map the structure and function of the human brain.

They looked at two regions of the brain. The first is the olfactory tubercle, which is associated with smell. Plus, they examined the periaqueductal gray (PAG), which is responsible for pain modulation and defensive behavior, as well as regulating feeding and satiety (a sense of fullness).

What they found is that people with a higher body mass index (BMI) have weaker connections between these two regions of the brain. The researchers suspect that the lack of communication between these brain centers may delay signals that would normally tell us to stop eating when we’re full. Yet, more studies are needed to confirm this connection and how it operates.

Stop Seasoning Your Food With Plastic

Did you know that salt, even “healthy” sea salt, is a source of plastic in most people’s diet?

As you may be aware, table salt goes through a chemical-laden process before it gets to your home. It gets stripped of all its valuable minerals before anti-caking chemicals are added, making it far from pure. That’s why many people have turned to sea salt instead BUT studies have found that even sea salt is often loaded with potentially harmful microplastics, likely due to the 8 million tons of plastic garbage dumped in the ocean each year. That’s why Ava Jane’s Kitchen went on a search for plastic-free salt and found it in their outstanding Colima Sea Salt. Sourced from Colima, Mexico– one of the only uncontaminated sources of natural mineral salt in the world– this sea salt is rich in natural minerals, incredibly flavorful, and (most importantly) lab-tested to be free of microplastics.

Could Brushing and Flossing Keep Your Joints Pain-Free?

You know good oral health is important for preventing cavities and protecting your gums. Yet did you know brushing and flossing may also help to prevent joint pain? Researchers at Rice University have found that gum disease can lead to openings in the lining of the mouth, enabling bacteria to enter the bloodstream and causing rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups. Therefore, taking care of your teeth and gums may help to keep arthritis pain at bay. (More)

4 Health Benefits (and 3 Risks) of Eating Strawberries

Strawberry season is in full swing, and this delicious fruit can benefit your blood pressure, blood sugar, memory, cognitive function, and more. Yet, despite their tremendous benefits, there’s a downside. Conventionally grown strawberries contain some of the highest pesticide levels of any type of produce. To protect yourself, your best bet is to grow your own or buy organic. Yet, if conventionally grown strawberries are the only option, here’s how to clean them. (More)

A “Healthy Dose” of Anxiety Can Be a Good Thing

Typically, we think of anxiety as something we want to avoid at all costs, yet it also has important upsides. When you go into “fight or flight” mode—with a racing heart and rush of adrenaline—your body is preparing you to take action, such as fleeing from an attacker. Plus, measured doses of anxiety are what give us motivation, such as inspiring and prodding us to get a big project done or get the bills paid on time. Here’s what you need to know about anxiety, including what to do when your levels are in overdrive. (More)
